When Something Does Not Work: How I Look for Help

Working with the computer · Tinkerer · grades 4–6 · ages 9–12
⏱ lesson 10–15 min · together without a screen: 10 min · paper and pencil

1. What your child learns and why

Practise “Look → Try the simple fix → Note → Ask”. Encourage your child to describe their action, expectation, observation and test result, so you can discuss a specific situation.

2. Three dinner questions

3. 10 minutes together, no screen

Draw a yellow sun on yellow paper. Let your child suggest testing another colour and note the result. Make a card with the steps and blank lines: “I did… I expected… It happened… I tried… Result…”. Swap roles and describe the situation.

4. What success looks like

Your child describes the situation without personal details, names the test and result, and knows when to stop and ask someone.

5. Common difficulties

“It does not work!” → “What did you do and what did you expect?” Too many changes → “Let’s try one simple thing and note it.” Encourage asking before trying whenever unsure.

6. Safety

An adult changes system settings. No downloading “fixes” or opening devices. Ask a person first, then use official help together; the adult checks the source. Write only about the fictional situations in the exercise.

7. Where to go next

Before: DB-RK-21 “Someone Else's Picture - May I Use It?” · Next: DB-IG-01 “Games Before Computers: Luck and Skill”

You do not need to know the answers. Say: “Let’s find out together.”
