The Kind Word in Chat: Tone, Emoji and Misunderstandings

Path: Internet & Safety · Level: Explorer · Age: 8–10 (grades 3–4)
⏱ lesson 15 min on screen + 10 min together without a screen · 🧺 paper and pencil

1. What your child learns and why

Your child reads one invented message in five ways and sees how capitals, dots and emoji change how it sounds. They learn that a chat has no voice and no face, and that when unsure, we ask. They build their own message from a greeting, a reason and a kind word. Everything is invented; nothing is typed, saved or sent.

2. Three questions for dinner

3. 10 minutes together without a screen — three voices

  1. Choose a short sentence (“Okay.”) and say it in three ways: cheerfully, tiredly, sternly. The others close their eyes and guess.
  2. Write it on paper and notice that the voice cannot be heard from the page — just like in a chat.
  3. Add a kind word or a smile and read it again. At the end your child draws a card with a kind word for someone close.

4. What success looks like

5. Common difficulties

Say: “You don't have to know everything. When you are not sure — ask.” You don't need to know all the answers either; find out together.

6. Safety

The lesson is about a kind tone, not about bullying; all messages are invented. If something in a chat frightens your child — they should tell an adult they trust. If help is needed (Bulgaria): the national helpline for children 116 111; the Safer Internet Centre SafeNet.bg — 124 123.

Who to contact (Bulgaria): 116 111 · 124 123 (safenet.bg) · 112

7. Where to go next

Next lesson: coming soon (DB-IB-17). Previous: DB-IB-15 “Before I Share a Picture of Someone Else”.

You don't need to know the answer. Say: “Let's find out together.”
