Smart Devices at Home

Track: The Guardians · Level: Tinkerer · Ages 7–13 · Link: lessons DB-IB-01 and DB-VK-12
⏱ lesson 12 min on screen + 15 min without a screen · 🧺 paper, a pencil

1. What your child learns and why

Your child finds out which devices at home listen, see or are online, and learns four habits from the advice of the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). Your child notices and asks; you change the settings. The aim is calm and order, not worry.

2. Three questions for dinner

3. 15 minutes together — the four settings

  1. Change the factory password of every smart device — for example to three random words — and switch on two-step verification if available.
  2. Switch on automatic updates. If you do not use the device from outside the home, switch off remote access.
  3. Before selling or giving a device away, restore the factory settings. Before buying, check how long the maker will update it.

4. What success looks like

5. Common difficulties

Say: “You noticed something important — let's check it together.”

6. Safety

Your child does not change settings alone. The panel in the lesson is made up and touches no real device. The advice is from the NCSC (UK); for a specific device, see the maker's instructions.

7. Where to go next

Next lesson: DB-PZ-11 “The Siren and the Message to Everyone”. Previous: DB-PZ-09 “My Face, My Rights”.

You don't need to know the answer. Say: “Let's find out together.”
